Offering a fresh approach to nursing home care

Evergreen Care announced as sponsors of Remembrance Run 5K 2024

Evergreen Care has been announced as co-sponsors of Remembrance Run 2024 along with 123.ie

Thirteen years ago Frank Greally founded the Remembrance Run 5K – the unique Walk or Run event that takes place annually on the second Sunday of November in the Phoenix Park,  in association with Athletics Ireland. It is a special event that is supported by around 5,000 runners and walkers every year.

Frank believes that we should try to fulfil the need – “To do the things we Can- while we still Can”- especially connecting with or visiting family and friends – in some cases where we may have lost contact with them for a while. “Regret is too heavy a load to be carrying,” Frank said at the event launch. In 2023 Frank made a trip to the Blue Mountains in Australia to visit his only brother Tom and he now looks back with gratitude and some comfort that he did not leave it too late to make that long promised visit. Frank and his brother Tom had their final parting on the train platform in Katoomba near Sydney in May 2023. On April 15th 2024, Frank received word that Tom died suddenly in home in the Blue Mountains. “If I have a message to share at the launch of this year’s Remembrance Run 5k – Walk or Run event, it’s to reach out to family and dear friends and do those things you need/wish to do while you still can do them,” Frank said. “I had been a long time promising by brother Tom that I would visit him at home in the Blue Mountains near Sydney and I wonder how I would be feeling now if I hadn’t ,made the decision to make the trip in 2023.” “Tom was my only brother – nine years older than, me and when he died suddenly in April this year it was then I fully realized how important my decision was to go and visit him. I had done what I promised to do and that brought a deep sense of gratitude and comfort when I learned of Tom’s passing. “The writer Con Houlihan, in whose memory I founded the Remembrance Run 5k after his passing in 2012, used to say that ‘The Last Time’ are the three most poignant words in any language. A few verses from my song for my brother Tom echo Con’s words to me: ‘The last time’ are three words so poignant We never know what’s around the bend  That evening I felt so close to you I wished our walk would never end And still there is some consolation That I made the trip I’d promised to And we got to walk and talk together For one last time- just me and you  Music, Choirs, Poetry and a special Wall Of Remembrance on which participants write the names and messages to loved ones passed, are just some of the elements that make the Remembrance Run 5k such a unique experience.

Evergreen Care and 123.ie Sponsorship set to make the event bigger and better than ever

This year’s event marks the 13th edition of the Remembrance Run and it promises to be bigger and better than ever with new partners Evergreen Care and 123.ie coming on board to lend their support.

Eamonn Prone, CEO of Evergreen Care, said: “Evergreen Care puts people at the heart of everything we do, and we have first-hand experience in seeing the importance of community, family, and friends when a loved one passes. That is why we are delighted to be partnering with this year’s Remembrance Run 5k which allows us a special day to come together and remember all of our loved ones who have passed”.

At the launch, Dublin solicitor Dermot Furey described how in 2013, the year after his beloved wife Moira died from pancreatic cancer, his family and over 200 friends participated together in the Remembrance Run 5k to celebrate Moira’s life and her memory. “It was a beautiful and uplifting experience for everyone – a perfect way to for us to gather and do something positive to remember Moira who was always cheerful full of fun and laughter., “Dermot said. “We have been coming back each year to the event and now I don’t have to remind my friends about the event – they already have it in their plans as something to do on the second Sunday in November.”

Grief happens in instalments

Speaking at the launch, Declan Coyle, author of the best selling books -‘The Green Platform’ and ‘Living On The Green Platform’, said: “Grief happens in instalments. Just when we think we’re over it, and we’re ‘better’, then along comes another ‘grief instalment.’ Had the relationship not been so good, the grieving wouldn’t be so bad. Your deep grief is a signpost pointing to a deep and lasting love connecting you to your loved one.” Declan’s advice on The Green Platform for those experience grief is: “Feel the feeling fully. Cry the tears. Take time and then choose to turn grief into good works, helping and uplifting others.” Michelle Molloy, Marketing Communications Manager for 123.ie, who are supporting this year’s event said: “The team in 123.ie are delighted to be supporting Frank, Athletics Ireland and the Remembrance Run 5K on this special 13th anniversary. We’ve long been admirers of the event, and the truly unique atmosphere experienced by all who take part. We look forward to seeing the thousands expected to participate this year as we walk or run in memory of all those gone before us.” If you would like to share a special memory of a loved one; family or friend – or add some names to our online Remembrance Wall – please email: marketing@athleticsireland.ie.
